With shame, the human being manifests almost instinctively the need of affirmation and acceptance of this 'self,' according to its rightful value." "In the experience of shame, the human being experiences fear with regard to his 'second self'. ![]() Pope John Paul II expressed some similar ideas: More generally, the idea is that we can only really feel ashamed if we first feel pride. Put differently, the musician would only be capable of feeling ashamed because he first indulged in the pride of thinking more highly of his ability than was in accord with the truth. If he were to attempt a more challenging performance before others (or even just performing alone, "to himself") and make some mistakes, he might feel ashamed because those limits which he had not acknowledged would be on display. If, on the other hand, that same musician were not humble but were prideful, then he might indulge in the feeling of impressing others with his performances but be fearful that they should realize his limits. On the other side, he will not indulge unduly in patting himself on the back for the level of performance he is capable of, because it is exactly what he has already acknowledged and accepted that he can do. Whenever he plays, he will know exactly at what level he will perform and so will not feel bad that others might see the limits of his skill, because he has already accepted those limits. If that musician is truly humble, then he will have submitted himself to - that is to say, he will have fully accepted - the truth about his ability. One way of defining humility is submission to the truth.Ĭonsider, then, the example of a middle of the road musician.
